Back in 1953, Keep America Beautiful was formed in New York City to unite the public sector and private companies in a “national cleanliness ethic.” Almost six decades later, KAB continues to teach children and adults alike how to be good stewards of our natural surroundings.
Now in celebration of America Recycles Day, the Local Search Association is happy to announce KAB’s backing of the industry’s opt-out website, stronger recycling rates and more effective use of paper. Highlighted in a press release issued today, KAB Chief Operating Officer Becky Lyons lauds the “simple solution” of www.YellowPagesOptOut.com.
Since launching its sustainability program, our industry has improved delivery choice options for consumers, increased recycling rates and dramatically reduced paper usage. In fact, industry suppliers project the directory industry will use 50 percent less paper by the end of 2012 than it did at its peak usage in 2007. This decrease has been driven by changes in the size of directories, more efficient manufacturing, an industry sponsored effort to reduce printed residential white pages, a general decline in the number of directories distributed and the consumer choice website.
KAB has long focused on educating individuals about what they can do on a daily basis to help the environment. Now with KAB highlighting our work, more people will understand how our industry has made directory publishing a much more ‘green’ endeavor.
By reusing paper materials, favoring eco-friendly inks and glues, helping people recycle their outdated directories as well as easily make choices about what directories they want to receive, the Association’s message fits well alongside KAB’s mission.
The Association will also be sponsoring the KAB’s 58th National Conference at the end of this month in New Orleans, where member publishers AT&T Advertising Solutions, Dex One and Yellowbook will have an opportunity to meet with KAB affiliate communities across the country. The KAB sponsorship is part of our Conference Collaborative initiative in which representatives of member companies unite in person to attend important environmental and government conferences.
The Association looks forward to working with Keep America Beautiful to help spread awareness of the industry’s sustainability programs and to developing other innovative source reduction ideas.
