Google Updates iOS Maps to Streamline Local Search

Google announced updates to its Google Maps app for iOS this week. In addition to syncing Maps with the address book, Google streamlined the local search process.

Now users can search for local businesses by clicking an icon corresponding to one of 13 categories including coffee, drinks, gas, post offices, hotels, grocery stores, pharmacies, movie theaters, malls, hospitals, ATMs and attractions. When a category is chosen, related businesses near the user’s current location are displayed.

The update also incorporates all the functionality of Google+ Local. From Maps, users can access reviews, see photos and browse business profiles.

Google Maps for iOS is doing incredibly well in its return to the iTunes Store, after briefly being removed to accommodate Apple’s launch of its much maligned maps application. Google’s new updates are sure to be a welcomed feature by both businesses and local searchers.
