  1. Please “appropriate” linking strategy you recommended (i.e. cross-linking with other local businesses) strikes me as being extremely dangerous as Google would likely see this as spam. Unless a local business has many diversified backlinks, exchanging links with too many companies (albeit local ones) can easily result in a Google penalty against your site.
